Mobylette racing

Downhill soapbox racing near the beginning of this series of posts was matched for spectacle on Sunday in Bresdon, just up the road.

The signs went up a couple of weeks ago so excitement had been mounting and reality didn’t disappoint. We wandered the pits before the start and admired how much effort had gone into making these basic bikes raceable.

Engines still drive the top of the front tyre but everything else looks to be changeable within the rules.

Seven different classes, closed roads to make a 3km loop, timing screens, complimentary programme, a bar, commentary and the mayor glad handing us in welcome. Wonderful stuff.

We watched the 12 o’clock start and tipped our hats to the resilience of these guys (leathers taped over with bubble wrap on the left leg for this anti-clockwise course). A warm day, close competition for six hours and certainly in few teams - Pastis with lunch before the start. - Again, we’re startled by how different our countries are in some ways.

Couldn’t happen in the UK.
